Calgary ESL Courses
ESL4WORK specializes in the following English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for your Calgary staff. English courses can be customized to meet your employees’ needs. All classroom instruction is provided on-site at your company (e.g. boardroom, classroom etc).
Each course is 42 hours and provided over eight weeks. Costs are as follows:
Private Class of 1- $95/hr
Private Class of 2-6-$145/hr
Private class of 6+-$175/hr
Accompanying Services
- Pre-Hire Assessments– to ensure new candidates are functionally competent with respect to language and culture.
- Canadian Corporate Culture Training– course topics include: business etiquette, meetings, personal space, initiating small talk, etc.
- Document Review– technical reports and other important business correspondence can be edited and sent back within 24 hours.
- Cross-Cultural Manager Training– topics include: intercultural communication styles, conflict resolution, interviewing/promotions, strategies for maximizing productivity, etc.
Level One Course Descriptions
1. Speaking Skills
This course develops conversational fluency and accuracy at the workplace. Students will be taught a wide variety of language functions, such as expressing an opinion, carrying on a conversation, giving and receiving compliments, showing preference, idioms, and phrasal verbs. This training also focuses on utilizing conversational strategies under different workplace scenarios.

2. Pronunciation
This course teaches all of the phonetic sounds (consonants, vowels, and diphthongs) in Canadian Standard English. There is a strong emphasis on linking, word stress, pausing, intonation patterns, vowel reduction, rhythm, phrasing, and increasing tone of voice. Phonetic transcriptions, endings of words, and pronunciation stops are also developed in this course.

This comprehensive course develops the writing skills that are required to compose effective written correspondence at work. Format, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary development, and organization are all emphasized. Students are required to self and peer edit according to grammar correction symbols to practice writing in a clear and concise manner. The course centers upon the language of emailing, report writing, memorandums, safety and incidence reports, and business letters.

4. Active Listening

This training includes note taking, key phrases, listening for word stress and intonation, telephone conversations, and audio transcriptions. Students will also learn how to listen and translate colloquial words, idioms, humor, reductions and phrasal verbs while decreasing the need grammar translation.

This course centers upon developing knowledge and use of technical English at the workplace. Topics include engineering materials, mechanism descriptions, technical vocabulary & acronyms, classification etc. Students are required to demonstrate their technical expertise while incorporating key language phrases in role-plays, discussions, and presentations.

6. Presenting to Groups
This course develops self-confidence for participants by teaching skills used in meetings and presentations at the workplace. Strong emphasis is placed on voice projection, non-verbal language, presentation styles & strategies, organizing clear and coherent ideas, explaining technical diagrams and charts, expressing ideas, and developing audience interaction.

Students will have an opportunity to progress beyond learning the 52 phonetic sounds in Canadian Standard English in this advanced course. This course is designed for students who want to further enhance their pronunciation and ensure that they are easily understood by native speakers. The focus is primarily on improving pronunciation in communication and listening to speech at the conversational level.

Students will be using “Understanding & Using English Grammar”, by Betty Azar, on a weekly basis to reinforce grammatical concepts. Starting from a foundation of understanding form and meaning, students will engage in authentic communication, which can be applied to the workplace.
